Where Did That Come From?

I was a little more than shocked...first to get three eggs in one day and then to have one of them to be a fairy egg.  The egg in front of the picture was really long and skinny and about three inches long.  The egg in the back was probably medium size. The fairy eg was about as big as a quarter.  I love a good surprise in the morning.

Second And Third Surprise Today

I wanted to go out for some fresh air and to talk to the animals...don't judge!  The girls greeted me and followed me to the scratch bin.  And I might have given them just a bit of a treat back in the back flower bed...it needs a little scuffing up before spring...the chickens do my dirty work.  Everything has to earn it's keep around here.  You just don't get a free ride.  Well, maybe the goats do but they are great entertainment.

I think someone is finally kicking in.  The darker 'chocolate' eggs showed up today!

And then there was this one!  An egg is a clutch with the others with NO SHELL.

I am amazed that no one stepped on it and broke it.  The best way I can describe it is that it felt like a blister that is just ready to pop.

Michael and I tried to shine the flashlight so you could see the yolk on the inside.

We just had to open it up.

A Little Egg Toot

Making my usual morning rounds, cleaning out nesting boxes because the one hen house is a little overcrowded so they sleep in the nesting boxes...which drives me crazy. The bigger coop sleeps up to 8 chickens but only 5 have taken up residence in there.  Anyway...I always take a garden shovel and clean out the poop so the eggs don't get dirty...people like clean eggs.  I was just about to scoop this little 'toot' out onto the ground.  I think these smaller eggs are actually called fairy eggs.  This one was smaller than any fairy egg I have ever gotten...and we have gotten a few.  Just checking my info and a fairy egg is actually a small yolkless egg.  I have always thought it was just the size.  So Monday when all my dad's lady friends a Wyngate see the egg...we will crack it open and I will let you know if it had a yolk or not.

The color is such a dark green.  Emerald green.

It doesn't even register on the scale.  I measured it...from end to end it is 3/4 of an inch long.  And it is 1/2 in width.

Abnormal Eggs

I was reading about chickens, eggs, goats and all things farm animal related when I came across this...

Tiny eggs containing no yolk are referred to as fairy eggs, rooster eggs, wind eggs, dwarf eggs, rooster eggs or fart eggs (I don't make this stuff up). These eggs are common in new layers when the reproductive system isn’t quite synchronized yet. They can also occur in older layers when a piece of tissue from the reproductive tract breaks free and tricks the hen’s reproductive system into treating the tissue like a yolk, creating an egg out of it.  (The Chicken Chick)

I call soft-shelled eggs rubber eggs because the membrane is soft and pliable. Commonly produced by new layers, caused by stress, an immature shell gland, a nutritional deficiency or a glitch in the uterus, aka: shell gland. To find them occasionally is no cause for concern, to find them regularly can indicate a calcium, phosphorous or vitamin D deficiency.  (The Chicken Chick)
