Flowers, Fruits, and Veggies

Our growing season is winding down.  But we have begun to plant over-winter veggies. 

I feel that this season of growing cauliflower was a success.  We kept it away from the cabbage moths by putting it under netting.

Surprises From Every Corner

 

I have never seen this before.  The bean vine worked its way over to the tomato cage.  It wrapped itself around the cage and as it grew it pulled the tomato cage out of the dirt.  It was hanging in mid-air when I stumbled upon it!  CRAZY!

Even with the netting some cabbage moths got in and ate three of four plants.

Just now finally got some zucchini!  Planted once and the vine bores got all the plants.  So I went to the other side of the yard and planted six hills in the first raised bed.  All six plants have fruit on them.  I see some zucchini bread in our future.

On a  whim, I saved the top from the pineapple that we cut for dinner a few months ago.  I planted it in a little pot and look what happened.  All of the brown is the original top of the pineapple.  All the pretty green is a pineapple plant.  I have since planted it in a bigger clay pot.  Who knows what will happen over the winter.

The two growing bags are doing well.  I think it is time to thin them.  Carrots and radishes.

Wish I had known this years ago.  Those are raspberries we picked for our bushes.

August Fruits And Veggie Photo Dump

 Our peppers and cucumbers didn't do so well this year but our tomatoes have gone above and beyond last year's crop.

Mark is trying his hand at bag gardening.  I know that one container has carrots in it.  But I can't remember what he planted in the other one.

Veggie Walk

 

I love our little garden even though it hasn't done as well as in the past.  We still have lots to learn.  The good part is that I love learning and trying new things.  I love that the yahoos love to go on garden walks with us.  I love sharing. The downside is that I still have flower beds that have been untouched.  One day at a time.  One weed at a time.

And there is a story behind the green garden angel that is fuzzy (on purpose) in the background.  A long, long time ago in 2000, I got to help Sarah and some other children with their work at Ayer Elementary with Amy Feldkamp.  Did you get that...in the year 2000!  That angel has flown to WI and back to Milford.  She has literally weathered several storms but still hangs strong.  I love her and Amy.  Great memories!

The second planting in this bed is cauliflower.  We are waiting on the cabbage.

We are covering these with cloth to keep out the cabbage moths.

Once everything is planted we will tuck everything in to make it look like we know what we are doing.

Garden Walk With Emmy

 

Lots of delicious Lemon Boys.

Remember those suckers in the tomato vines? The ones in between the main stem and the branch?  I stuck them directly in the dirt and lookie, lookie what happened.  Little red tomatoes!  Farmer Wammy for the win!

The wind blew and down went a tomato plant and all.  Not a limb was hurt and the bamboo didn't break.  The strawberries might have gotten a little mushed but the sun will perk them right back up. With Emmy's help and no ladder standing we were able to get her back upright and secured to the fence.

A Day Of Firsts

I got to have every one of these beauties for breakfast this morning, DELICIOUS!!!

If we could have a few hot days I think the cucumbers would pop.  Today Murph and I split this beauty.  A sweet little beauty.

We split the first two tomatoes.  The Mr. Snow was almost a sweet taste.  The Akers WV was really good too.

Another garlic harvest.  It now has all been pulled and in the garage drying.

Thank you Imogene for our first potatoes.  They are so pitiful.

All the berries are in the ground but Mark is not really happy with the berry patch.  So we will redo it at a later date.

I beat the yahoos to the first strawberry.  It was so sweet and delicious.

The one stalk of corn growing among the onions.  I have no idea how it got there.

Our peppers just haven't taken off yet this year.  I don't think the cool, wet weather is helping at all.

The variety of beans is starting to climb the trellis.
