New Way To Keep Track Of Egg Production

This was not there when I checked the eggs on Saturday morning.  When I find a rogue egg it always goes in the compost.  If I am not sure when it was laid, it gets the boot.

I tried gathering all the eggs in the evening when I lock the girls in.  That worked but I would rather go out several times during the day so no eggs are stepped on and cracked, stepped on and gotten muddy or get pooped on.  I had 11 but I halfway dropped one and it got a small crack in it.  Another one bites the dust.

While I am in WV Mark and Michael are on duty these next few days.  I get pictures all through the day of the progress in egg production.

Everyone Wins

Beautiful day on Saturday means that we are out in the yard starting the big clean up for spring.

Squirrels come from everywhere because when we rake we pull up lots of acorns.  We are doing half of their work for them.

They love a clean pen...and so do we!

I found the little bells that the boys wore when they were little.  Had to save them.

And one egg coming up...laid in the goat bed.

And maybe the girls need a little sweet feed treat.

And talk about worms...tons of them everywhere.

Scratch away girls...making some good compost.

A Beautiful Friday

My chocolate egg layer strutting her stuff.

The chicken stink eye.

They found a new wonderful place to find good food...under the rabbit hutch.

After all the bad weather her feathers are slowly returning to the bright white they should be.

Checking out the back 40 for worms.

Hey, did you find anything over here?

this looks like a good spot.

Hey guys over here, I found some!

I'm coming!

Hmmm, I don't see anything here.

Maybe over here?

Is she looking?...

I just gotta taste it.

Well, that was a disappointment.

Hey, want to butt heads again?

You guys, give it up.

Is it time to get out and play yet?

So this is the Cluck-Thru...

Think they will notice we are the goats and not the chickens.

Great new deepest in the corner of the goat house.  On Thursday I found five eggs in here.

The Egg Drop

All 16 in one spot chowing down on some scratch.  I had to get a head count and this is the only way to get them all in one place at a time.

Wow, That's Some Work

They have been busy since I have been gone.  I love coming home and finding dozens of eggs in cartons and some in the skelter too.

Second And Third Surprise Today

I wanted to go out for some fresh air and to talk to the animals...don't judge!  The girls greeted me and followed me to the scratch bin.  And I might have given them just a bit of a treat back in the back flower bed...it needs a little scuffing up before spring...the chickens do my dirty work.  Everything has to earn it's keep around here.  You just don't get a free ride.  Well, maybe the goats do but they are great entertainment.

I think someone is finally kicking in.  The darker 'chocolate' eggs showed up today!

And then there was this one!  An egg is a clutch with the others with NO SHELL.

I am amazed that no one stepped on it and broke it.  The best way I can describe it is that it felt like a blister that is just ready to pop.

Michael and I tried to shine the flashlight so you could see the yolk on the inside.

We just had to open it up.

Here it comes!

Big, beautiful, orange yolk.

Tomorrows scrambled egg!

A Little Egg Toot

Making my usual morning rounds, cleaning out nesting boxes because the one hen house is a little overcrowded so they sleep in the nesting boxes...which drives me crazy. The bigger coop sleeps up to 8 chickens but only 5 have taken up residence in there.  Anyway...I always take a garden shovel and clean out the poop so the eggs don't get dirty...people like clean eggs.  I was just about to scoop this little 'toot' out onto the ground.  I think these smaller eggs are actually called fairy eggs.  This one was smaller than any fairy egg I have ever gotten...and we have gotten a few.  Just checking my info and a fairy egg is actually a small yolkless egg.  I have always thought it was just the size.  So Monday when all my dad's lady friends a Wyngate see the egg...we will crack it open and I will let you know if it had a yolk or not.

The color is such a dark green.  Emerald green.

It doesn't even register on the scale.  I measured it...from end to end it is 3/4 of an inch long.  And it is 1/2 in width.
